Types of Dental Modification

Tooth modification includes a spectrum of changes that alter the shape of the enamel crown, decorate the labial tooth surface, dye the tooth to another color, remove the tooth altogether (ablation), or inlay the tooth with precious metals or stones (Milner and Larsen 1991; Alt and Pichler 1998; Mower 1999; Arcini 2005; Zumbroich 2011; Burnette and Irish 2017). These main forms of modification are defined below:

Alteration of Enamel Crown

One of the most common forms of dental modification involves transforming the mesial and distal margins of the tooth, which can be accomplished through filing, notching, chipping, or a combination of all of these techniques (von Jhering 1882; Perino 1967; Stewart and Groome 1968; Romero 1970; Milner 1983; Milner and Larsen 1991; Sherrow 2001; Atienza 2014). There are numerous forms of such enamel removal represented in different places throughout the world, including among the Damara people in Southwest Africa, Cahokia in North America, different pre-Columbian groups throughout Mesoamerica along coastal Ecuador, and in the Philippines (Zumbroich and Salvador-Amores 2010).
